Automotive systems engineers have a new tool to ease the integration of on-vehicle CAN-based systems with legacy hardware.

Automotive systems engineers have a new tool to ease the integration of on-vehicle CAN-based systems with legacy hardware Pi OpenGateway is a powerful yet easy-to-use protocol translator developed by Pi Technology of Milton, England

OpenGateway can translate between different protocols and also originate messages in response to specified conditions, all with minimum latency or message delay.

OpenGateway can be configured using CANTranslator, a unique software support tool also developed by Pi Technology, which supports messages defined in Vector's industry-standard CANdb format.

Some examples of the possible uses of OpenGateway include: testing a new ABS module that uses J1939 protocol on a fleet of vehicles using a proprietary CAN protocol; changing message formats, IDs and transmission rates to integrate otherwise incompatible systems; and simulating the originators of network messages to replicate a complete vehicle control system when dynamometer-testing a prototype engine.

CANTranslator can be used to reconfigure the CAN message mapping without needing to recompile the software.

Also, the freely available Vector CANdb tool can be used to define the messages initially, with Pi's FreeCCP product used to reflash the module.

As OpenGateway is designed for on-vehicle use, it is particularly suited to fleet applications where automotive developers use 20-50 vehicles to test the integration of a new ECU onto using donor vehicles which do not always support the latest technology/protocols.

Additionally, as OpenGateway is based on a production automotive engine controller ECU, developers can take advantage of its automotive I/O to add other vehicle functionality into the OpenGateway module to further aid systems integration.

Paul Gosling, Commercial Manager, Pi Technology said: "OpenGateway has a lot to offer - it's cheaper than its competitors yet far more powerful and much easier to reconfigure.

It's a great new tool".
