SBS takes express route to serial
interconnect
ExpressLane PCIe switching and bridging devices provide SBS Telum boards with the versatile high-speed PCIe serial interconnect now being deployed in virtually all market segments.
PLX Technology is celebrating further penetration of its PCIe technology in the system-backplane market, as its PCIe interconnect technology has been designed into a range of backplane boards from SBS Technologies SBS's Telum family of AdvancedTCA (ATCA) and Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) networking and communications boards now features PLX ExpressLane PCIe switching and bridging devices, providing the Telum boards with the versatile, high-speed PCIe serial interconnect now being deployed in virtually all market segments

PCI Express switches star in San Francisco
This week in San Francisco, PLX Technology has been demonstrating its ExpressLane PCI Express PEX 8532 switch, highlighting its ability to enable high availability in a PCIe-based system.
This development reflects the strategic success both PLX and SBS have had in bringing PCIe to the rapidly growing ATCA and AMC markets.
Backplanes the PCIe-enabled Telum products address are critical elements in systems supporting advanced networking and communications applications.
"As PCI Express continues its rapid penetration in strategic markets such as backplanes, PLX is cementing its position as the leading supplier of PCI Express interconnect silicon to board makers addressing those markets", said David Raun, PLX Vice President of Marketing.

Interconnect chips enable PCI Express expansion
PLX PCI Express switches and bridges are providing high-speed interconnect functions to a range of PCIe expansion products from One Stop Systems.
"Today's announcement with SBS illustrates both companies' commitment to PCI Express, as well as the interconnect standard's significance in backplane designs".
"Furthermore, it illustrates how the SBS Telum boards using PLX switching and bridging devices are making optimal use of some of the key features of PCI Express - speed, flexibility and reliability".
"PLX and SBS Technologies are premier names in their respective markets - PLX in interconnect solutions and SBS in embedded-computing technology - so it was natural we'd select PLX for our PCI Express needs as we apply this powerful interconnect technology to the AMC and ATCA markets", said Dave Greig, President and Chief Operating Officer of SBS Technologies.
"PLX's PCI Express bridges and switches bring a level of performance, flexibility and reliability to the Telum family that our edge-product and enterprise-system customers demand".
In implementing the ExpressLane devices into the Telum line, SBS was able to leverage its legacy PCI designs and take advantage of PLX's ability to provide a smooth migration from PCI to PCIe.
This ease of migration both saved SBS design resources and improved the boards' time to market.
The Telum boards incorporating PLX PCIe technology include an array of designs that use the interconnect standard for a variety of applications.
The Telum 1001-DE, a high-performance AMC adapter with a DS3/E3 interface designed for high-availability telecommunications applications, features the ExpressLane PEX 8111 PCIe-to-PCI bridge and takes advantage of the device's small sise (10 x 10mm) and low power requirements (less than 500mW).
The Telum 1001-O12 ATM AMC adapter featuring a high-speed OC-12 interface also uses the PEX 8111 bridge to communicate with an ATCA systems host processor on a x1 PCIe link.
The Telum 1004-O3S is a high-performance four-port OC-3 ATM AMC adapter with traffic management, whose AMC-to-ATCA-processor connection is enabled by the ExpressLane PEX 8114 PCIe-to-PCI-X bridge, which delivers high throughput and the lowest power consumption of any PCIe-to-PCI-X bridging device.
The Telum FC2312 is a 2Gbit/s Fibre Channel AMC adapter providing connectivity to a x4 PCI Express baseboard equipped with an PEX 8114.
And the Telum GE-QT is a four-port Gigabit Ethernet AMC adapter with high bandwidth and high port densities, which takes advantage of the ExpressLane PEX 8516 16-lane switch's unprecedented flexibility to provide a x4 PCIe interface.
The PEX 8111 is the industry's smallest reverse-bridging chip, enabling board and system designers to easily develop or migrate their standard and small-form-factor legacy PCI products to the PCIe architecture.
The PEX 8114 bridge is the most versatile bridging device in its class, capable of forward, reverse and nontransparent bridging, and features high throughput.
The PEX 8516 is the industry's only 16-lane PCIe switch with four flexible ports, two virtual channels and nontransparent bridging.
