Coating protects aluminium substrates

A Poeton Industries product story

Poeton Industries has extended its Apticote range with the introduction of Apticote Keronite 3000.

Poeton Industries has extended its Apticote range with the introduction of Apticote Keronite 3000.

The new coating uses a plasma electro-oxidisation process to produce an extremely corrosion resistant ceramic-oxide surface with excellent insulating properties, that is ideal for coating materials used to carry electronic windings and circuitry.

Commenting on the new technology, a spokesman for Poeton says aluminium is the most likely substrate to benefit from the process.

He adds that there is also considerable interest from manufacturers seeking even greater weight reductions, as the coating and its properties can also be applied to magnesium.

A relatively thin film of the coating is capable of producing corrosion protection in excess of 2000 hours on certain aluminium alloys.

Up to 200 hours corrosion protection is achievable on cast magnesium alloys - a performance that has only previously been achievable using titanium and which no other coating is currently able to match.

By applying an appropriate thickness, Apticote Keronite 3000 is capable of withstanding voltages in excess of 1kV DC.

It can also form an effective thermal barrier to protect delicate components.

For example, against a 200C heat source a temperature reduction of 40C has been achieved using an aluminium heat shield coated with Apticote Keronite 3000.
