Advanced analogue switches feature chip scale packaging, very low on-resistance and wide voltage ranges to address the demands of next generation portable application requirements.

Pericom Semiconductor has introduced a new family of advanced analogue switches created for mobile terminal applications which feature chip scale packaging (CSP), very low on-resistance and wide voltage ranges to address the demands of next generation portable application requirements.

Pericom's new PI5A4xxx integrated circuits are dual high-bandwidth SPDT and SP3T CMOS analogue switches housed in ultrasmall 2 x 1.5 x 0.6mm CSP packaging.

Designed specifically for the mobile market, these small footprint switches are being used for multiband functions, polyphonic ring tones (MIDI), hands-free functions, FM radio, MP3/MP4 players and memo recorder applications.

"The convergence of more features and connectivity into increasingly smaller cellphones and other mobile terminals is driving the demand for analogue switches in the smallest available packages".

"Even with the smallest die, the plastic packaging form factor had been the limiting aspect to offering smaller footprints for PC boards", explained Shaf Rahman, Pericom Marketing Director.

"Understanding this constraint, Pericom's micro-coated CSP packages, with a solder bump pitch of 0.5mm for easy handling, have eliminated the plastic housing around the die".

"Combining the low on-resistance (0.5ohm), wide voltage ranges (1.65 to 5.5V), and small package, have allowed us to obtain major design wins with several top mobile terminal manufacturers", continued Rahman.

The family comprises: the PI5A4684 low voltage dual SPDT analogue switch with a 2:1 mux/demux bus switch; the PI5A4765 low voltage dual SPDT audio clickless analogue switch with headphone/mute detection, 2:1 mux/demux bus switch; the PI5A4764 low voltage dual SPDT audio click-less analogue switch, 2:1 mux/demux bus switch (with shunt switches); and the PI5A4213 low voltage dual SP3T analogue switch, 3:1 mux/demux bus switch.
