Power chip scales the peaks for mean design
Integrated power conversion IC handles peak demand of up to 127W, making it ideal for applications that exhibit very high peak-to-RMS power requirements.
New from Power Integrations, the PeakSwitch PKS607 is an integrated power conversion IC capable of handling peak demand of up to 127W.
The PKS607 addresses a wide range of applications that exhibit very high peak-to-RMS (root mean square) power requirements, such as printers, audio amplifiers, and home entertainment systems.
This PeakSwitch family provides peak power on demand while allowing designers to specify a transformer sized for the continuous power level.
This capability significantly reduces the size, weight, and cost of the overall power supply design.
PeakSwitch PKS607 handles almost 50% more peak power than earlier PeakSwitch ICs.
The new device incorporates a 700V MOSFET and low-voltage control circuitry on a monolithic IC.
On/off control ensures highly efficient operation at all load conditions, plus very low standby-power consumption.
This enables equipment designers to easily comply with all current energy-efficiency standards, including the proposed Energy Star efficiency standard for printers, which specifies power budgets during standby, sleep and active operation.
Other key features include integrated auto-restart, hysteretic thermal shutdown and integrated frequency jittering to minimise EMI.
"By addressing higher peak load requirements, the PKS607 allows more designers to take advantage of the PeakSwitch's low overall system cost and easy implementation for larger power supplies", said Andy Smith, Product Market Manager at Power Integrations.
"Additionally, the PKS607 enables designers to easily meet current and future energy saving standards for active, standby, and sleep-mode power requirements".
"No other integrated power conversion IC on the market today can make that claim".
PKS607 is available in lead-free, plastic through-hole DIP-8 and higher power standard TO-220 packages.
Pricing in 1000-piece quantities for the PKS607 - offering 75W continuous, 127W peak in an F or Y package - is US $1.50.
Small quantities are available now from factory stock, with production quantities available six weeks ARO.
Design support includes a datasheet, an application note (AN 41), a reference design kit (DAK 93) containing an operational 1.07A continuous, 2.7A peak output power supply and product samples, and the company's power supply design software, PI Expert.
