The Perforce Defect Tracking Gateway (P4DTG) integrates the company's fast software configuration management (SCM) system with external defect tracking solutions.

Perforce Software has announced the introduction of the Perforce Defect Tracking Gateway (P4DTG) that integrates its fast software configuration management (SCM) system with external defect tracking solutions The gateway comes complete and is easy to install and configure

The initial release will include a plug-in that supports an integration with Mercury Quality centre 9.0.

"Co-ordinating defect tracking with configuration management and testing systems is a key cost-saving and efficiency benefit to developers and corporations", said Melinda Ballou, Programme Director for Application Life-Cycle Management at IDC.

"Costs increase astronomically the later in the life cycle that code problems are found and fixed (from 10x to 100x the cost of earlier detection and resolution)".

"Establishing effective code management up-front is key, and a good match for distributed development and agile approaches".

Perforce SCM is an award-winning tool that versions and manages source code and digital assets for enterprises large and small.

The two primary components comprising P4DTG are a graphical configuration editor and a replication engine.

A visual configuration editor makes it easy to map fields between the defect tracking system and Perforce.

The replication engine co-ordinates the propagation of data between Perforce and the defect tracking system.

The system supports the one-way or bi-directional synchronisation of data.

Change lists, which are used by Perforce to describe the work done and files changed while addressing a job, can also be replicated.

"Many customers have wanted an integration with Quality centre and we're pleased to be able to provide it", said Nigel Chanter, chief operating officer of Perforce Software.

"P4DTG will significantly accelerate the availability of support for new plug-ins to a variety of defect tracking systems both commercial and homegrown".

P4DTG is included in Perforce Server version 2006.2 for Windows XP and is available now.

There are no special licenses to purchase, install, or configure.

Interested developers are invited to download and evaluate Perforce free from the Perforce website without obligation for a 45-day trial.

This offer includes free technical support during the evaluation period.

A free, fully functional, two-user version is also available from the website.

End-user licences, including one year of support and maintenance, start at $800 per seat; volume discounts are available.
