Eighth bricks stay cooler than quarters

A Power-One product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team May 11, 2005

With thermal performance superior to similarly rated quarter bricks, a new series of 30A eighth-brick convertors are ideal power sources for communications and server applications.

New from Power-One is the 30A SQE Series of eighth-brick DC/DC convertors.

With a full range of outputs (1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.5 and 3.3V DC) providing thermal performance superior to 30A quarter bricks, SQE Series products are ideal power sources for communications and server applications.

At temperatures up to 70C, the 1.8V output SQE requires only 61m/min airflow to deliver 29A and 91m/min to deliver a full-rated 30A.

This industry-leading thermal performance is facilitated by high efficiencies, up to 92% for the 3.3V output model at half load, and advanced thermal management techniques.

Preclusion of a heatsink combined with a low profile minimises airflow shadowing to enhance cooling for downstream devices.

Migrating to this high-reliability convertor (15.75Mh MTBF as per Telcordia TR-332, Method 1, Case 1) is facilitated by pin-for-pin and trim-equation compatibility with other eighth bricks and 25-30A quarter bricks.

Other features include wide-input-range (36 to 75V DC) operation, an onboard input differential LC filter, remote sense, and startup into prebiased loads.

The SQE series is protected against input undervoltage, overtemperature, output overcurrent and output overvoltage.

Regulatory agency approvals include UL60950 (including Basic insulation requirements) and Demko certification to IEC/EN60950.

Pricing is $38 each in quantities of 1000.

Evaluation units are usually available from stock.

Production quantities are typically available in six to eight weeks.

RoHS compliant versions of this extremely-price-competitive power solution will be available in Q4 of this year.
