Power-One has revealed details of a Z-One Digital IBA design win for Beijing Xinwei Telecom's "Big Smart" SCDMA wireless service.

Power-One has revealed details of a Z-OneTM Digital IBA design win for Beijing Xinwei Telecom's "Big Smart" SCDMA wireless service SCDMA incorporates advanced technologies, such as smart antennas, software radio and synchronous wireless access protocols, to target a Chinese market projected to grow from 3 million users in 2005 to over 20 million by 2007

This extremely complex application requires six different voltages, from 1.3 to 3.3V DC, with peak currents approaching 60A.

Xinwei's Chief Scientist, Dr Guanghan Xu commented: "Using the Z-Series graphical user interface, we were able to configure a power system in less than ten minutes".

"This is extremely impressive considering that the diverse range of functionalities we implemented included paralleling, turn-on cascading, and fault management".

"Z-One Digital IBA saved weeks of design time compared with analogue power management".

"The complex power requirements of our basestation control board, combined with our need for on-the-fly reconfiguration, would have been extremely difficult to support without Power-One's revolutionary Z-One Digital IBA".

Steve Goldman, Power-One's Chairman and CEO, commented: "We are very excited about the revenue-growth potential for this application".

"In November, it was announced that China's two fixed telecomms network operators, China Netcom and China Telecom will be launching SCDMA networks".

"Xinwei's growth potential has impressed others as well; they were ranked fifth in the first Deloitte Technology Fast 50 China Program and included in Red Herring's list of the top 100 private companies in Asia".

Goldman continued: "Xinwei's application is another excellent example of the extraordinary performance, and savings in time and cost, provided by Z-One Digital IBA.

Although their control board uses 11 point of load (POL) convertors, they only have to inventory one Z-Series POL part number due to the wide range of programmable attributes".

"In addition, a single digital power manager controls all 11 POLs, their DC/DC front end, and I2C communications with their host system".

"This advanced functionality is only obtainable by using standard Z-Series components, available from Power-One and other Z-Alliance members".

The industry-standard I2C-compatible Z-7000 Series uses an extremely scalable architecture that employs many revolutionary operating concepts.

An extensive range of parameters, such as output voltage for each POL, is user-programmed via I2C protocols, or through a graphical user interface, and stored in a Digital Power Manager.

At system startup, the Digital Power Manager uses this stored information to initialise up to 32 POLs.

After system initialisation, ongoing bidirectional communications facilitate intelligent power system operation.

Hardware-configurable Z-1000 POLs are also available for customers preferring power management without programming.
