Flarion Technologies has mustered 14 companies for its alliance for the development and deployment of its flash-OFDM technology for mobile IP-based services.

Flarion Technologies has mustered 14 market leaders and wireless technology and solutions companies for its alliance for the development and deployment of its flash-OFDM technology for mobile IP-based services.

Flarion's flash-OFDM technology allows mobile operators to profitably offer ubiquitous connectivity to enterprise and mass market customers.

The alliance of companies will focus on promoting flash-OFDM for mobile broadband services.

Mobile operators will now be able to profitably offer existing rich, multimedia content to customers.

With flash-OFDM, the users experience an 'always-on' broadband desktop experience in a fully mobile Wide Area Network (WAN), just like they do today on their corporate LAN or at home with a broadband connection, without limitations to content, security or applications.

The companies who have joined Flarion's Alliance program include: Certicom, Cisco, Compaq, Decibel Products, Enfora, Flarion Technologies, Funk Software, GTRAN Wireless, Invertix, LCC International, PacketVideo, Pentair Electronic Packaging, Philips Semiconductors and Powerwave Technologies.

"This alliance of companies behind flash-OFDM shows a real momentum behind the technology", said Allen Nogee, senior analyst with Cahners In-Stat/MDR.

"A packet-switched, IP-based mobile broadband system such as flash-OFDM is the future of mobile wide area networks".

Flarion's flash-OFDM mobile broadband system is a packet-switched radio access network that seamlessly transports IP services over-the-air from an IP network to a user device.

With its unique quality of service (QoS) feature at the flash-OFDM RadioRouter, mobile operators can offer tiered class-of-service and ensure efficient use of the network in a flat-rate billing business model.

Any laptop, personal digital assistant (PDA) or other IP-enabled device can be unwired by simply plugging in a flash-OFDM PC Card - with no changes to the IP protocol, applications, devices, or content.

"The commitment of these industry leaders demonstrates the acceptance of flash-OFDM technology as the catalyst for profitable mobile broadband services", said Peter Carson, vice president of business development with Flarion Technologies.

"Together, Flarion and the alliance are mobilising the Internet and giving the market exactly what they want - ubiquitous broadband connectivity to the Internet as it exists and at the right price".

The Flarion Alliance programme members are supporting market trials of the flash-OFDM mobile broadband system.

Flash-OFDM user modems are plug-and-play compatible with existing IP devices, operating systems, applications and broadband content.

On the network side, the RadioRouter basestation interfaces to an off-the-shelf edge router and transparently supports all existing IP standards in the core network.

For developers and integrators, the Flarion architecture provides standards-based, open interfaces to cellular and IP networks - including host devices; network infrastructure, operations and business support systems, applications and content.
