The RapidIO trade association says that 100 RapidIO-based products are now on the market and three new companies are joining the association.

Following a surge of development activity and new product announcements, the RapidIO Trade Association says the number of RapidIO-based products on the market has surpassed 100 and that has been nearly 55,000 downloads of the RapidIO Serial Specification since 2003 In addition, three new companies, Bittware, Embedded Planet, and HiSilicon Technologies, have joined the RapidIO Trade Association and are bringing RapidIO systems to market

"Both RapidIO Trade Association members and OEMs have been reporting a tremendous surge in development activity with RapidIO technology over the past two quarters", says Tom Cox, Executive Director of the RapidIO Trade Association.

"RapidIO technology is firmly supported by a diverse and growing ecosystem, an independent test facility, and the breadth and depth of products needed to design and produce RapidIO-based systems".

RapidIO is an open-standard switched fabric designed by specialist companies in embedded computing specifically for developers of wireless infrastructure, edge networking, storage, scientific, military and industrial equipment.

RapidIO technology delivers the reliability, cost effectiveness, performance and scalability required for these application areas - as well as offering a broad ecosystem of more than 50 partners and suppliers.

In addition, the RapidIO standard roadmap is well attuned to the changes affecting embedded-system designs, ensuring RapidIO technology will meet future system needs.

"The abundance of products and the growth of the ecosystem reaffirms that market momentum for the RapidIO interconnect standard continues to accelerate", says Dr Lance A Leventhal, Technology Editor, Network Systems Design Newsletter and ATCA Newsletter.

"Clearly, RapidIO technology addresses the needs of equipment designers as they develop innovative, high performance systems".

More than 100 products based on RapidIO specification are available today for use in design and development.

Products include a wide variety of development tools and boards, embedded systems, intellectual property, semiconductors (ASICs, DSPs, FPGAs, ICs, PLDs processors), software, boards, modules, and test and measurement systems.

Bittware, Embedded Planet, and HiSilicon Technologies joined the RapidIO Trade Association, expanding the ecosystem with DSP and FPGA products, production-ready boards and software, and high-performance chips.

Bittware, which announced the first customer shipment of its Serial RapidIO product on its B2-AMC in January, provides the building blocks required by OEMs for developing and deploying systems in defence, communications, instrumentation, and life-sciences applications.

BittWare's product offering addresses OEM needs from prototype to production and spans a variety of platforms, including AMC, VME, PCI, CompactPCI, PC/104, PC/104-Plus, PMC and stand alone.

Embedded Planet is a leading single-board-computer and embedded-systems solution provider.

The company's set of capabilities supports OEMs in the networking, military, industrial, and medical markets through the entire lifecycle of product development with customised training from project launch through high-quality volume production services during product deployment.

HiSilicon Technologies provides chips for fixed network, optical network, wireless network, data communication and network security, which are widely used in over 100 countries and regions around the world; WCDMA handset chipset and solutions, and chipsets and solutions for network monitoring, videophone, DVB, IPTV and digital TV.
