Multifunction I/O card reflects growing trend in military computing applications to embrace CompactPCI technology, and the increased requirement for powerful and flexible I/O capability.

Reflecting the growing trend in military computing applications to embrace CompactPCI technology, and the increased requirement for powerful and flexible I/O capability, Radstone Embedded Computing has announced the rugged CompactPCI MFIO-C6 multifunction I/O card With an MPC8270 PowerQUICC II processor at its heart to offload the management of its array of interfaces, the MFIO-C6 offers an astonishing range of digital and analogue I/O functionality, including eight analogue inputs; seven open collector 250mA outputs; 48 LVTTL I/O channels; five LVDS output ports; five LVDS input ports; two 10/100BaseT Ethernet channels; and six serial ports

The MFIO-C6 is also designed to deliver maximum security with its three-axis accelerometer to enable tamper detection, and secure instant erase SRAM, in which the contents are automatically destroyed at power-off or as a result of some key event.

"The MFIO-C6 was developed in response to a specific customer requirement, and a variant of it will be at the heart of one of the industry's most prestigious programmes", said Colin Davies, Business Development Manager at Radstone Embedded Computing.

"We expect, however, that the functionality and performance it delivers will be attractive to a wide range of customers across a variety of rugged applications - and for customers who need something more or different, we are able to use the same platform to develop custom versions of the board, as well as to help those customers integrate the complete subsystem".

The MFIO C-6 - which occupies only a single slot, and thus represents a very cost-effective solution - recognises the requirement for today's military applications to interface to a variety of sensors, switches and indicators, and delivers a high level of functionality as well as the flexibility for customers to selectively map their individual requirements.

The low power MPC8270 PowerQUICC II processor supports integral BIT diagnostics, initialises interfaces and then manages I/O through a shared memory scheme in order to reduce host processor loading.

The concept of a network-attached I/O device is supported by the provision of two Ethernet interfaces, while serial ports allow connection to external peripherals and serial attached transducers.

Discrete interfaces enable direct connection to real-world devices.

The MFIO-C6 supports CompactPCI hot-swap mechanisms and provides a number of system-level functions such as an elapsed time indicator, real-time clock and temperature sensor.

Availability of the MFIO-C6 is immediate.
