The latest addition to the Raychem PolySwitch range of PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient) resettable strap devices is the VLP270.

The latest addition to the Raychem PolySwitch range of PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient) resettable strap devices is the VLP270, offering approximately 37% lower resistance than a comparably sized VTP device Providing both overcurrent and overtemperature protection, the VLP270 device is designed to accommodate the increasing demands for longer run time of cellular phones, notebook computers, PDAs and other portable electronics

The device helps reduce warranty returns and improves safety by latching into a high resistance state when a short circuit or overcharge fault occurs.

Once the fault and power to the circuit are removed, the device automatically resets for normal operation.

"The exceptional low-resistance characteristics of the VLP270 device help battery pack designers lower pack impedance", said Strap Battery Product Manager, Johnny Lam.

"In addition, the device's resettable thermal protection capability permits the elimination of one-shot thermal fuses, which are subject to nuisance tripping", he added.

The VLP270 strap device's narrow, low-profile form factor and axial leads allow it to be welded directly to battery cells, conserving valuable space in portable electronics applications.

The device provides hold current ratings of 2.7A at 25C and 1.4A at 60C.

It measures only 23.1 x 5.3 x 0.8mm and has a maximum time-to-trip of 5s at 13.5A.

It has a voltage withstand capability of 16V and typical resistance of 15mohm at 25C.

The VLP270 device can be provided in either bulk or tape and reel packages.

UL, CSA and TUV certifications are pending.
