UL recognition for circuit protection devices

A Raychem Circuit Protection product story

PolySwitch TRF600-150 circuit protection devices are now UL recognised to UL1434 and have passed UL tests from UL497A.

PolySwitch TRF600-150 circuit protection devices are now UL recognised to UL1434 and have passed UL tests from UL497A.

The PolySwitch devices meet the UL specification for "secondary protectors for communication circuits" for telecomms and networking applications, and help provide resettable overcurrent protection in telephones, fax machines, set-top boxes, security systems, modems and other electronic equipment that must comply with UL60950 and TIA-968-A standards.

The recognition of these parts by UL, with the additional testing to UL497A - normally applied to multicomponent protection modules, rather than discrete components - permits integration of the device without additional module or equipment testing.

The PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices help protect against current transients that exceed nominal operating voltages of telecommunications lines, and helps manufacturers of equipment that must comply with the telecomms requirements of UL60950 reduce test time and expenses.

The compact physical dimensions of the PolySwitch TRF600-150 device facilitate development of more densely populated PCB designs, and permit drop-in replacement for many existing designs.

In addition, the new TRF600-150 device is compliant with the RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2002/95/EC that bans or restricts the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE).

When compared with traditional lightning-robust fuses that do not interrupt a circuit until fault currents exceed 1A, resettable PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices offer a 150mA hold current, and limit let-through energy to significantly lower levels.

This permits the use of smaller, less expensive, and lower-power-handling circuit components.

In addition to interrupting potentially damaging power faults, the PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices are robust to ITU-T K.20/21/45 lightning surges, making them an appropriate choice for secondary protection of telecom and networking equipment designed for use around the world.

"The UL497A listing is typically not a passive component specification, but rather an equipment specification for multicomponent protection modules", said Boris Golubovic, Telecommunications Market Manager for Raychem Circuit Protection.

"However, UL granted recognition to the TRF600-150 device because it passed key elements of the surge protection specification, permitting its use as a UL-recognised secondary protection component".

The TRF600-150 device is marked as a UL Recognised Component, and is available in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume manufacturing, or in bulk quantities.
