Fuse and MOV come together to protect on the line
The RoHS-compliant 2Pro device incorporates PolySwitch PPTC overcurrent technology with a metal oxide varistor component into one innovative, thermally protected device.
Raychem Circuit Protection has announced the introduction of its 2Pro device series that features integrated overcurrent/overvoltage circuit protection technology designed to help prevent damage to telephony communications equipment.
The device's small footprint, resettable functionality and co-ordinated protection capabilities allow for use in a wide range of telephony and VoIP equipment applications such as cordless phones, gateways, data modems, set-top boxes, security systems, MDF (main distribution frame) modules, analogue linecards and ISDN linecards.
Power surge damage to PSTN and VoIP equipment may occur as a result of lightning and ESD surges, power contact, and induction with AC lines.
The RoHS-compliant 2Pro device incorporates PolySwitch PPTC (polymeric positive temperature coefficient resistor) overcurrent technology with an MOV (metal oxide varistor) component into one innovative, thermally protected device to help provide current limiting during overcurrent events and voltage clamping during overvoltage events.
This single-device approach to co-ordinated circuit protection helps reduce component count and improve equipment reliability.
The widespread adaptation of VoIP gateways in homes and enterprise environments has resulted in increasingly stringent safety requirements for customer premise equipment.
The 2Pro device helps equipment manufacturers comply with UL60950 and remain operational after specified lightning tests.
It also helps equipment comply with surge tests per TIA-968-A, IEC60950, and ITU-T K.20/K.21.
The UL497A-listed protector also helps provide ESD protection.
"The new 2Pro protection device helps meet important performance parameters for cost-sensitive PSTN and VoIP telephony equipment", said Boris Golubovic, Global Marketing Manager for Raychem Circuit Protection.
"Additionally, this solution helps improve network reliability, reduce maintenance and repair costs, and enhance user-satisfaction with customer premise equipment".
The 2Pro overcurrent/overvoltage protection device features a minimumhold current of 120mA and the voltage clamp at 1mA is 270 V.
2Pro devices are compatible with industry standard installation procedures, and are available in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume manufacturing.
Samples available now, and volume pricing is US $0.32 in quantities of 100,000 units per year.
