A new family of SuperH microcontrollers is designed for use in white goods such as air conditioners and industrial equipment such as inverters and motor control.

The first two models in the new SH7146 SuperH series feature 80MHz high-speed operation, a 1.6-fold improvement in performance over the current SH7046 series, and enhanced on-chip peripheral functions, including three-phase PWM timers and high-speed A/D convertors The series is designed for use in white goods such as air conditioners and industrial equipment such as inverters and motor control

The SH7146 series incorporates an SH-2 32bit RISC CPU core and features an on-chip power supply step-down circuit.

The series is designed to attain 5V single power-supply operation and achieve lower current dissipation by suppressing the increase in current dissipation associated with higher speed.

The microcontrollers also include 256Kbyte of high-speed Flash memory capable of constant single-cycle (12.5ns) access.

Not only does this simplify debugging during system development, it also facilitates program amendments after completion of end-product development and program modifications for specific customers.

The new microcontrollers incorporate a variety of functions ideally suited to motor control applications, such as DC brushless motors used in outdoor air conditioner units and refrigerators and AC induction motors used in general purpose inverters.

These include two multifunction timer pulse unit modules (MTU2 and MTU2S) that provide three-phase PWM output capability for inverter products and enable two motors to be controlled by a single device.

Activation of A/D convertors for motor current detection is synchronised with a carrier to allow automatic operation at any timing, enabling the CPU load to be reduced and making it possible to achieve functions such as single shunt vector control.

The devices offer three 10bit A/D convertor units whose conversion speed has been doubled.

A function is also provided for protecting power modules such as an IGBT module.

Inputting a signal from off-chip to the port output enable (POE) module allows three-phase PWM output to be placed in the high impedance state (electrically cut off state) automatically, preventing over-voltage damage to the power module.

Other on-chip peripheral functions include three serial communication interface channels and a watchdog timer channel.

On-chip debugging functions enable real-time debugging at the maximum operating frequency and for simple emulation to be carried out using an actual device during system evaluation.

Supported development environments are the USB bus-powered E10A-USB, which requires no external power supply, and the E200F with faster emulation capability, allowing real-time tracing to be carried out at the maximum operating frequency.

The SH7146F has an 80-pin LQFP while the SH7149F has a 100-pin LQFP and offers provision for the connection of external memory.

Sample shipments will begin in December 2004.
