Speedy 32bit MCU has time for industrial tasks
The H8SX/1582F is the latest and fastest 32bit H8SX microcontroller from Renesas Technology.
Renesas Technology Europe has released the H8SX/1582F, its latest and fastest 32bit H8SX microcontroller.
Boasting enhanced features such as 5V operation and an array of timers, the device is targeted at industrial applications.
It is also the first MCU to boast 48DMIPS performance while offering software compatibility with the vast range of H8 microcontrollers widely used in Europe.
The H8SX/1582F comes with 256Kbyte embedded full-speed Flash, 12Kbyte RAM and on-chip-debug (OCD) support.
The combination of in-circuit programmable Flash and low-cost tools based on OCD lowers engineering investment and eases development as debugging is implemented with the mass-production chip in a user's PCB.
This reduces the risk of technical complications arising between development and production.
An additional benefit offered by the H8SX/1582F is high-end timer functionality.
The device has two independent timer pulse units (TPU), each with six channels of 16bit timers, and a total of up to 32 input capture or output compare units.
In addition, clock frequency can rise to 48MHz, providing a resolution of just over 20ns, and the channels can be synchronised and simultaneously cleared by compare match or input capture.
Each TPU can generate up to 15 phases of 16bit PWM.
Some channels can be cascaded or can act as buffers for others, and phase counting mode can be set for four channels in each TPU.
Access to the TPU is via a fast 16bit bus, each module is supported by 26 independent vectored interrupts, and each module can be turned off under software control to save power.
Finally, unit 0 can drive the programmable pattern generator (PPG) peripheral to generate an 8bit digital stream of data patterns and can trigger the analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) to start a conversion.
Such strong timer capabilities are required in many of today's demanding industrial and consumer applications, such as robots, NC machines, measurement equipment and other instrumentation.
The H8SX/1582F offers a number of peripherals including: a fast direct memory access controller (DMA) and a versatile data transfer controller (DTC) to offload the CPU from data transfer tasks; two serial ports (SCI) supporting async, sync and ISO7816 modes as well as a three channel synchronous serial communication unit (SSU); a 10bit 16-channel analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) with just over 7us conversion time; and up to 65 IO ports as well as 17 input ports, some of which support open drain drive and programmable pull-up resistors.
The MCU is now available in a lead-free and RoHS-compliant 120-pin LQFP package and is supported by the popular Renesas E6000H emulator or E10A-USB OCD-debugger (PCI or PCMCIA options on request).
An evaluation board is planned for May 2005.
