The latest high performance addition to the SuperH family of microprocessors boasts a 50% increase in processing performance and enhanced functionality compared with the current SH7780 product.

Renesas Technology Europe has launched the SH7785, its latest high performance addition to the SuperH family of microprocessors The device incorporates an advanced SH-4A CPU core and boasts a 50% increase in processing performance and enhanced functionality in comparison to the current SH7780 product

The SH7785 is capable of up to 600MHz operation which, together with an integrated LCD panel controller, makes it ideal for advanced automotive multimedia applications such as navigation and infotainment systems.

The SH-4A CPU core provides processing performance of 1GIPS (1000MIPS).

The SH7785 also features a floating point processing unit (FPU) with 600MHz maximum operating frequency and performance levels of 4.2GFLOPS.

The FPU provides hardware and software support of sine/ cosine operations, accelerating the drawing process for 3D graphics required for advanced multimedia displays.

A multifunction display unit that can control overlapping display screens is integrated into the SH7785 as an LCD panel controller.

With this unit, the device can support up to 260,000 colours and three SVGA, four WVGA and six 480 x 234 pixel resolution screens.

Such support for screen resolution and rich colour allows for highly versatile, expressive image and video displays to be realised at low cost as the design of the display unit reduces the number of external parts required, thus reducing BOM.

On-chip cache memory comprises a 32Kbyte four-way set associative instruction cache and a 32Kbyte four-way set associative data cache, helping to speed up software processing.

In addition, the SH7785 has 8Kbyte of RAM, accessible at high speed in instruction fetches, and 16Kbyte RAM accessible in data accesses.

These defined on-chip RAM areas ensure real-time responsiveness of the system is improved.

In order to further support the core application of high level, high quality automotive multimedia systems, the SH7785 features a 300MHz 32bit dedicated bus connectable to high speed DDR2-SDRAM, providing a maximum data transfer rate of 2.4Gbyte/s.

This enables the creation of a high quality, fast display capability, using the DDR2 SDRAM as a display data buffer.

Additional on-chip peripheral modules are provided, including a direct memory access controller, interrupt controller, watchdog timer, an interface for connection to an audio codec IC and other serial interfaces.

The SH7785 436-pin BGA package is approximately 20% smaller than the current SH7780 package, enabling further miniaturisation of end products.

An environmentally friendly lead-free package is also available.

The device features an on-chip debugging function that enables real-time debugging to be carried out at the maximum operating frequency.

An E10A-USB on-chip debugging emulator is also available as a development environment.

Sample shipments will begin in May 2006.
