Renesas Technology Europe has announced the H8/38347F series of low-cost low-power 5V operation microcontrollers that incorporate either 32 or 60Kbyte of on-chip Flash memory and a large LCD drive capability The LCD controller is capable of displaying up to 160 segments for simple display applications and makes the design of electronic meters using the H8/38347F much simpler than previous generations using older devices

Microcontroller shinks to metering applications
The H8/38004F MCU offers extremely low power consumption together with 32Kbyte single-supply on-chip Flash memory and is the first in the SLP series that is available in a 64-pin quad flatpack.
The series is optimised for any application requiring 5V operation with extremely low power consumption, yet very high performance, such as metering applications, datalogging and sensors.
The H8/38347F series uses a high performance 8bit CPU core that operates at 16MHz and is capable of executing a 16bit addition in 250ns and an 8bit multiply in 1.75us.
This makes the series ideal for metering applications that require high reliability and performance.
The on-chip Flash memory provides the user with an enhanced level of flexibility to easily program the chip once sourced.
A 32kHz suboscillator allows a wide range of low power modes to be implemented.
This ensures that power consumption is kept to an absolute minimum.
In addition, the main oscillator startup time is just 20us, approximately 100 times faster than that of a standard oscillator.
This dramatically reduces the amount of power required to start the main oscillator, reducing battery size or increasing the life of a standard battery.
The H8/38347F series features an asynchronous counter designed to count external pulses while it is in any low power mode, therefore reducing current drain to a minimum.
This provides a significant advantage over current alternative offerings for many applications such as metering that require pulses to be counted continuously during the operation of the product.
The Renesas Technology E8 on-chip debugger provides debug support for the H8/38347F series.
This enables users to take advantage of many of the debug features normally found on full emulators, but at a fraction of the cost, while using the real device.
