The SH7201 is a high-speed microcontroller based on the best-in-class SH2A CPU core.

Renesas Technology Europe announces the availability of the SH7201, a high-speed microcontroller based on the best-in-class SH2A CPU core The new device delivers 288MIPS performance from its superscalar CPU core, has a floating point unit (FPU) and the world's fastest interrupt response at only six clock cycles (at 120MHz only 50ns)

Together with the powerful MTU2 timer unit supporting three-phase PWM and excellent connectivity, the SH7201 is ideal for high-end electrical motor drives, robotics and other real-time applications in industrial, home and office automation.

The SH7201 boasts eight channels of FIFOed serial ports, three channels of I2C and two channels of CAN.

The traffic to and from these channels is supported by an eight-channel DMA.

The device has a highly sophisticated MTU2 timer unit, with six channels of 16bit timers with 21 output compare/input capture registers and special PWM modes to facilitate driving electrical motors of any kind.

The PWM modes occupy just one third of the MTU2, while the remaining channels understand quadrature encoder feedback and can handle general timer tasks.

Beyond the MTU2, the SH7201 has two channels of general purpose 8bit timers, a real- time clock (RTC) and a watchdog timer (WDT).

The large peripheral set is completed by an eight-channel 10bit ADC, a two-channel 8bit DAC and up to 123 IO lines.

The performance is supported by a flexible Bus State Controller including SDRAM interface and by 2 x 8Kbyte cache, as well as 32Kbyte high- speed RAM.

The SH7201 comes in a 176-pin LQFP RoHS compliant package and is supported by Renesas' popular E10A-USB on-chip debugger, as well as by Lauterbach's Trace32-ICD.

An evaluation board is available now and a low cost Renesas Starter Kit (RSK) including an E8 debugger and LCD will be available in September.
