The Euros real-time operating system, including its extensive cross-development environment, is now available to run on the SH-2A series of microcontrollers.

Renesas Technology Europe and its gold alliance partner Euros Embedded Systems have announced the immediate availability of the Euros real-time operating system, including its cross-development environment, for Renesas' popular SH-2A series micros The SH-2A family includes a superscalar RISC CPU core with Harvard architecture and versions with an IEEE-compliant floating point unit (FPU)

Register banks enable extremely fast interrupt response in as little as 30ns.

CPU performance is 480 Dhrystone MIPS and peripherals within the family include up to 8 x serial, 4 x IIC, SPI, SSI, CAN, USB (Host/Function), TFT drive as well as strong timers with AC motor modes and 12bit ADC's with 3x S and H to name just some examples.

The family also includes a fast Flash microcontroller, the SH7211F.

This device has 512Kbyte of very fast 12.5ns access Metal-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon (MONOS) Flash and produces a CPU performance of 320 Dhrystone MIPS when executing from the embedded Flash memory.

Euros is a multitasking real-time operating system suitable for a wide range of applications in the fields of measurement, control and multimedia.

Euros is designed for hard real-time conditions and is characterised by very short response times, compactness, robustness, scalability and flexibility.

The concept adopted during the creation of the operating system was to establish a uniform, hardware-independent operating-system platform that encapsulates the ever-growing numbers of microcontrollers and their peripherals in order to make the software development as efficient and economical as possible.

Euros implements a powerful device driver interface that operates on a hardware abstraction level (HAL), allowing for the highest possible device driver compatibility.

The first Euros implementation is available now on the Renesas Starter Kit RSK SH7201.

The RSK SH7211 will be supported by the end May 2007, and the RSKplus SH7203 will be supported in June.

The RSK SH7201 and the RSK SH7211 can be combined with a comms board, providing additional Ethernet and USB connectivity.

The network protocol is based on Euros' own TCP/IP implementation and can be programmed over the standard BSD socket interface.

On top of the TCP/IP, stack services like PPP, FTP, SNMP, SMTP etc are available to the user.

In addition, a web server rounds the embedded internet offerings allowing for services like remote maintenance, visualisation and configuration of embedded real time applications.

Furthermore there are many more middleware modules available such as file system, codecs, Java, OPC UA, etc.

The stand-alone cross-development environment, which comes with Euros, allows for comfortable program development and debugging and consists of Euroskit (Project Manager), Euroscope (Symbolic Debugger), Eurosobjects (System Objects Display Manager), Eurostrace (Capture and Trace Manager of all possible system and user generated events), Eurossfr (Display and Modification Manager for the OSpecial Function Registers'), Eurosanalyze (Statical Code Analysis, Stack Usage Calculation, etc.).

Says Joachim Hupper, Renesas Technology's Consumer-Industrial Business Unit Marketing Manager: "We are pleased to complement our high-quality and very fast real-time SH-2A family of microcontrollers with the Euros Real-Time Operating System, as Euros is just as solid and as fast as our products, the perfect combination for deeply embedded real-time applications".

The connection to the starter kit RSK SH7201 or RSK7211 is performed via Renesas' popular USB JTAG Adapter E10A.
