High performance from small TFT range
A new range of compact transflective colour TFT displays from Philips are ideal for handheld applications where low power and good readability are important.
The 5.25in-sized PCM-6892 gives the engineer options of CPU speed (667MHz/1GHz), dual-slot PCMCIA (fitted/absent), and PSU interface (ATX or AT-style), functional choices that can result in a cost saving for the buyer.
The onboard Via CPU is built with 0.13um manufacturing processes, thereby minimising power consumption and heat generation.
Built-in L1 and L2 cache memory accelerates computing performance, and with embedded 3DNow! and MMX Technology, this CPU can handle high-end multimedia applications.
The Eden 667MHz CPU is an ideal choice for fanless board design, whereas the 1GHz CPU normally requires active cooling.
The PCM-6892 comes with an integrated AGP 4X 2D/3D graphics accelerator, which provides a 36bit LCD interface (both LVDS and TTL) with simultaneous analogue VGA and nonsimultaneous composite video (Pal/NTSC) outputs.
The integrated AC97 2.0/SoundBlaster compatible audio provides good sound presentation for multimedia applications.
Networking is facilitated by the Realtek dual channel 10/100 Base-T Ethernet controller.
Legacy serial users should be happy with the four COM ports (three RS232 and one RS232/422/485), and there are four USB1.1 ports.
A socket for Type II CompactFlash card allows the user to operate without a standard hard drive, with many designers now utilising the small OS footprint offered by Windows CE, XP Embedded and embedded Linux.
RDS has interfaced the PCM-6892 to various flat panel displays (both TTL and LVDS) and touch screens.
