Longer term there is a proposal for Eco Design Requirements for Energy Using Products Directive, for which manufacturers will need to prepare and comply.
Under these directives it will be mandatory for manufacturers to be managing and funding the collection and treatment (recycling/recovery) of their products by 13th August 2005.
Products within the scope will have to be marked and information provided to users, treatment facilities and agencies from 13th August 2005.

These new laws on material content and recycling of electrical and electronic goods have been brought in to protect the environment and make manufacturers responsible for organising and financing the recovery and recycling of their products.
The EuP Directive will add mandatory eco design requirements across the whole product life cycle.
As more than 80% of the environmental impact of products is determined at the design stage, it will become vital for designers and engineers to develop new expertise in eco design.
To help manufacturers increase their understanding, skills and prepare for these new responsibilities, RFI has launched a range of environmental consultancy and training packages.
The consultancy services available include legislation gap analysis, EMS gap analysis, ecological profiling of product, implementation and eco-design programmes, and a full compliance management programme.
RFI is one of only a few organisations currently offering training in directives and impacts - WEEE/RoHS, EuP (energy using products), eco- design, EMS and compliance management.
