A new GPS evaluation board provides a hardware and software development platform for embedded applications that use the GPS receiver modules from RF Solutions The evaluation board represents a useful development tool for a rapidly expanding range of applications that includes asset management, vehicle tracking/navigation and addons for PDAs

The GPS-EVAL2R1 provides position, velocity and time information in a standard NMEA string format.

The data is fed directly to a PC via an onboard standard RS232 9-way D-type connector.

Evaluation software then allows the display of a wide range of information including current location, real-time position plot, satellite locations and signal strength.

The board has eight pin headers that allow configuration and monitoring of the GPS module.

Jumper link five enables the selection of either a 4800 or 9600baud rate.

The evaluation board has two LEDs - red to indicate whether or not GPS information is available, and green to indicate the availability of a valid almanac.

The evaluation board, which is fully compatible with a wide range of popular routing software including Microsoft Autoroute, has low power consumption and features an onboard regulator to allow the use of a DC power supply that can range from 3.5 to 15V.

The GPS-EVAL2R1 evaluation board is supplied with a GPS antenna, supporting software and RS232 cable for connection to a PC.
