GPS receivers are easy to integrate

A RF Solutions product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Oct 24, 2006

Compact integrated GPS receiver modules provide strong performance, cost effectiveness and a high degree of flexibility in handheld and portable applications.

RF Solutions has introduced a new family of compact, all-in-one, GPS receiver modules designed for easy integration into OEM equipment.

Comprising eight models, the GPS-41 range provides strong performance, cost effectiveness and a high degree of flexibility in handheld or portable applications such as asset tracking, PDA-centric personal navigation systems and vehicle based navigation products.

The range comprises the basic GPS-41MLR with onboard antenna, a programmable version of the basic model, and programmable and nonprogrammable versions with a USB-level serial interface.

Embedded modules complete the range and are available in programmable and nonprogrammable formats for both through-hole and surface mounting.

All RF Solutions GPS receiver modules have low power consumption of approximately 100mW - a key feature for modules designed for use in portable, often battery powered equipment.

The GPS-41 family has 12 parallel channels and 4100 search bins that provide fast satellite signal acquisition and rapid hot and cold startup times.

All modules specify a positional accuracy of 5m circular error probable (CEP), and support satellite-based augmentation systems such as WAAS and EGNOS that help yield high accuracy.

Acquisition and tracking sensitivities of -140 and -150dBm, respectively (-137 and -147dBm for surface mount embedded modules GPS-41SMDR and GPS41SMDF), ensure good navigation performance, even in difficult urban-canyon environments with a limited sky view.

Programmable versions of the new GPS receiver modules feature Flash memory that enables users to modify the NMEA sentence configuration and re-Flash the firmware in the modem.

Operating temperature range for all models in the GPS-41 range is -40 to +85C.
