Testers support new digital TV standard
Rohde and Schwartz produces both operating equipment and test instruments for new DVB-H digital TV standard.
Many network operators have already recognised the potential of the new digital TV standard DVB-H.
Using this DVB-T expansion, multimedia content can be efficiently transmitted to mobile receivers.
The DVB-H-compatible product portfolio from Rohde and Schwarz supports the development of these new services.
The digital R and S NX7000 transmitter family and the R and S DIP010 data inserter have been upgraded to integrate DVB-H into transmission operations.
DVB-H-compatible T and M equipment includes the SFU broadcast test system, the DVRG DTV recorder generator, the DVM for MPEG-2 monitoring and analysis and the EFA test receiver.
The mobile radio industry and broadcasting network operators plan to provide increasing multimedia content such as TV and video streaming for mobile receivers.
In their first pilot projects, they have already used the DVB-T-based digital TV standard DVB-H.
As mobile terminals cannot spare much energy for receiving multimedia services, the data of a DVB-H service are not broadcast continuously, but bundled in bursts.
By using this discontinuous transmission, referred to as time slicing, mobile terminals can be powered down between data packets and thus save up to 90% in energy.
In addition, forward error correction (FEC) improves mobile reception.
DVB-H features a 4k modulation mode that ensures reliable mobile reception, even when travelling at high speed in a car.
Additional flags defined in the DVB standard (referred to as TPS bits) signal whether and which DVB-H features are used by the receiver.
To integrate DVB-H into existing transmission operations, all digital TV transmitters of the R and S NX7000 series can be upgraded with the R and S SV700 and R and S SV702 exciters.
Software and firmware upgrades support this integration into the high-, medium- and low-power range with the two functions - 4k modulation mode and TPS signalling - which are essential for DVB-H.
The R and S DIP010 data inserter is the core of the DVB-H systems.
It inserts the multimedia content of the DVB-H services (eg video to H.264) into DVB transport streams.
The option R and S DIPH supports time slicing, FEC and multiprotocol encapsulation.
Standard-compliant DVB-H data streams can thus be generated.
In addition to operating equipment, Rohde and Schwarz also provides expansions to its T and M product portfolio.
The all-new SFU broadcast test system meets not only the DVB-T standard but all functions of the new DVB-H standard as well.
Using the R and S DVRG, digital video streams of diverse formats can be recorded and replayed.
A comprehensive DVB-H stream library is available for this MPEG-2 recorder/generator.
A new version of the Stream Maker software tool will be able to generate also DVB-H streams.
The R and S EFA real-time TV test receiver for analogue and digital systems identifies error sources in a quick and targeted manner.
The instrument can be upgraded to recognise TPS signalling.
When fitted with a new option, the R and S DVM MPEG-2 analyser family can additionally monitor and analyse DVB-H transport streams.
The operating and T and M equipment portfolio for DVB-H is now available from Rohde and Schwarz.
