A novel range of miniature blue chip LEDs will significantly simplify the design and reduce the component count of 3.0V battery-powered applications.

By eliminating the need for external voltage conditioning circuits and driver ICs, two new miniature blue chip LEDs from Rohm will significantly simplify the design and reduce the component count of 3.0V battery-powered applications Unlike conventional blue LEDs with typical forward voltage ratings of 3.6-3.7V, the Rohm SML512BC2T top view and SMLA12BC2T side view blue LEDs use a new InGaN chip to achieve forward voltage ratings of just 3.0V at a forward current of 5mA

As a result, the low-power devices can be used in 3.0V, battery-powered applications without additional voltage step-up generators, charge pumps or LED driver ICs.

Rohm's SML512BC2T and SMLA12BC2T operate with a dominant wavelength of 470nm and are ideally suited to backlighting in mobile phones, PDAs and other portable 3.0V applications.

Each device can deliver a luminous intensity of up to 22mcd (at a forward current of 5mA) and is rated for a maximum power dissipation of 74mW.

High levels of ESD protection further contribute to component reduction as no additional protection circuitry is required, as well as allowing the devices to be handled in the same way as a standard LED during manufacture.

Supplied in a miniature 0603 package with a profile of just 0.55mm, the SML512BC2T top-view LED offers a viewing angle of 140 degrees.

The SMLA12BC2T is supplied in a miniature package with dimensions of just 1.6 x 0.55 x 1.15mm that is fully compatible with a popular package used by other side view LED manufacturers.

The new LEDs are rated for a maximum forward current of 20mA and a reverse voltage of 5V.

Operating temperature is specified as -20 to +80C.
