Rapid is taking action to ensure that the products it sells are compliant with RoHS and WEEE legislation prior to the respective deadlines The RoHS (Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances) directive will require that new equipment sold within the European Community from the 1st July 2006 (apart from some exceptions that are still to be confirmed), will not contain any of the following substances in quantities above the prescribed levels in each homogenous material: 0.01% cadmium; 0.10% lead; mercury; hexavalent chromium; polybrominated biphenyls (PBB); and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

Colchester based Rapid Electronics has been chosen by Varta Microbattery to spearhead the promotion of its new PowerOne consumer battery range.
The UK Government will be making regulations to transpose the RoHS directive into UK law, in the near future.
It is expected that the proposed limits will apply, and that these will (as planned) be effective from 1st July 2006.
The WEEE Directive is expected to become law in the summer of 2005 and the obligation to mark and identify equipment as per the regulations will take effect from 13th August 2005.
However, the obligation for "Producer Responsibility" of take-back has been delayed until January 2006 at the earliest.
