Thermionic valves (or vacuum tubes in the USA) are not the latest of technologies in electronics; in fact they were invented in the early 1900s However despite their general replacement by germanium and silicon semiconductors since the second half of the 20th century, valves have survived as the preferred technology in a number of sectors, particularly in the military, broadcasting and the audiophile and professional audio communities
