Capacity boost for military LiSO2
batteries

Saft is set to begin production of the next generation of lithium sulphur dioxide batteries for military applications around the world.

Saft is set to begin production of the next generation of lithium SO2 (sulphur dioxide) batteries for military applications around the world The new batteries will further improve the existing reliable lithium SO2 batteries' capacity by around 20% while still maintaining high- and low-temperature performance

The Saft Valdese, North Carolina site was the leading supplier of high-performance batteries to the US Military during Desert Storm, during its Enduring Freedom Operation in Afghanistan, and again during the recent operation in Iraq.

The first battery that Saft will qualify with this new technology will be the BA 5590, which is the highest volume battery purchased by the US military.

The BA 5590 battery, which uses the lithium SO2 chemistry, has been the main battery type used for the US military in communications applications over the past 10-15 years.
