Cells boost handheld computer operating
time

The new Microport Colibri ruggedised, pen-operated handheld computer is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries which provide up to 5h of operating time between charges.

The new Microport Colibri ruggedised, pen-operated handheld computer, designed to function reliably in demanding conditions such as rain, dust, cold and even mud, is powered by Saft VL high power, lightweight lithium-ion batteries which provide up to 5h of operating time between charges Mettenmeier Mobile Solutions has developed the Microport Colibri to be the ideal handheld computer for the utilities as well as professionals who rely on geographical information systems (GIS) in outdoor conditions

In addition to its rugged construction it features a large (176 x 135mm) colour display which offers full daylight-readability, even in bright sunlight, and data can be entered using either the membrane keyboard or an active pen system.

Typical applications for the Microport Colibri include surveying for land registration, energy and water network maintenance, environmental data collection and forestry and agriculture.

The Microport Colibri comes equipped with a 3.6Ah 10.8V battery comprising three Saft cylindrical VL cells.

This can deliver up to 5h of operating time, which is easily enough for a half day of work in the field, and the battery can also be recharged from a car battery operated DC/DC charger which provides even greater flexibility in planning a fieldwork schedule.

Ingo Rameil, Marketing Manager for Mettenmeier Mobile Solutions, said: "We have been using Saft batteries for quite a number of years and now appreciate the advantages of lithium-ion technology for our new Microport Colibri handheld computers".

The battery fitted to the Microport Colibri consists of three Saft VL 34480 cells connected in series.

This is a cylindrical 4/5 D-size cell with a nominal voltage of 3.6V and a nominal capacity of 3.6Ah which weighs just 103g.

It offers the advantages of high power, excellent charge retention and high cycling capability over a range of operating temperatures from -40 to +60C (in discharge).

Saft's lithium-ion electrochemistry uses a graphite negative electrode and lithiated cobalt oxide positive electrode that gives charge retention of 95% after one month's storage; and cycling capacity of 85% of initial capacity after 500 charge-discharge cycles, and 75% after 1000 cycles.
