It can also give useful data on people's travel, leisure and shopping habits.
Until now poster audiences have been very hard to measure.
Project Audiposter, developed in Italy, provides statistics comparable to those that are available for television audiences and press readership.
The GPS system provides data on the travel patterns of the people carrying the device.
These data are stored and when compared with information on the location of posters are used to calculate the audience and advertising value of the sites.
Saft lithium-ion MP 144350 rechargeable batteries were chosen because of their performance, long life and reliability.
Initially, 750 receivers have been made.
Each weighs 200g and can operate for 3 days between charges.
During that time the receiver will monitor satellite signals every single second.
The pioneering Audiposter survey now covers 36 Italian towns and cities.
The current project which began in 2000 continues until mid-2004.
Much interest has been shown in using the technology in other countries.
In addition to poster audience data the tracking device also provides valuable information on the movements and travel habits of ordinary people.
It show that people tend to vary their routes over a period of time, even down to how drivers hunt for parking spaces.
It can give information on traffic conditions and shopping habits.
(Individual user data are protected by European law).
Audiposter has been made possible through the co-operation of several organisations.
Eurisko is the business that took the initiative to develop a method of improving the measurement of outdoor advertising.
It maintains a database of poster sites and compares this with the data provided by the receiver.
The firmware within the device has been developed by a company called Eureka.
This firmware can calculate the receiver's position even where it is not directly 'visible' to the satellite. Request a free brochure from Saft Lithium Battery Division ...
