US military sticks with Li-SO2 cells

The BA 5590 battery is the military's most widely used portable energy source, powering a variety of communication devices used in combat by the army services.

Saft has received an order from the US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to supply the US military with BA 5590 lithium-sulphur dioxide (Li-SO2) batteries.

The batteries are mainly used in communication equipment such as Sincgars and PRC-90 radios.

This order was issued by DLA as a sustainment order to allow Saft to maintain its supplier base in the interim until deliveries begin under the multiyear contract awarded on 16th July 2008.

Saft is the leading supplier of BA 5590 batteries to the US military and the Li-SO2 chemistry is the most commonly used lithium technology with a significant proven record in combat situations.

"This action by DLA confirms their commitment to managing the lithium battery supplier base in an equitable manner and allows Saft to be able to continue to supply these critical defence items in a timely and cost - effective way".

The order will be fulfilled from Saft's Valdese facility, which provides portable power in multiple lithium battery technologies including Li-SO2, Li-MnO2 and Li-ion.
