Switch to NiCd assures Saudi telecomms
backup

Saudi Telecom Company installed specialised rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries at 100 sites during 2005 to provide power backup where its remote access network connects to the main exchange.

Saudi Telecom Company (STC), the leading provider of telecommunications voice and data services to the population of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, installed Saft specialised NCX rechargeable nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries at 100 sites during 2005 to provide power backup where its remote access network connects to the main exchange In its first major project for STC, Saft Nife Middle East (subsidiary of Saft Group) recommended the switch to NiCd batteries to solve the problems experienced by STC when using VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries in outdoor telecomms cabinets where the extreme temperatures (up to +55C) were a cause of low reliability and premature failure

Starting in 2003, STC asked Saft Nife Middle East to develop a backup power solution for outdoor telecomms cabinets that would both meet the requirements for reliability in extreme temperatures and would fit within the limited space available.

Saft supplied a field trial battery comprising 38 NCX80 cells (for a nominal voltage of 48V and 80Ah capacity).

After successful site testing for over a year, in 2005 STC rolled out the Saft batteries to 100 sites.

Saft has designed the specialised NCX telecomms block battery to fulfil the demanding requirements of remote or outside telecomms plants including local or access terminals, base transceiver stations, basestation controllers, optical node units and so on.

The combination of stable sintered/plastic bonded plate technology with flooded electrolyte and corrosion-free chemistry enables the NCX to eliminate problems such as dry-out, grid corrosion, plate growth and thermal runaway.

With a much longer life, predictable operation, very low maintenance and lower life cycle cost, it was clear to STC that the NCX offered a realistic and attractive alternative to its troublesome VRLA batteries.

Furthermore, installation of the compact, modular NCX within STC's outdoor cabinets was simple since it fits most existing VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) battery compartments with ease and uses the same charging equipment. Request a free brochure from Saft Industrial Batteries ...
