CompactPCI SBC takes the rough with the smooth
The CM4 3U is a CompactPCI single board computer for new and legacy commercial and government COTS applications operating in harsh environments.
With this in mind, SBS designed the EIS-4008-CU with redundant, hot swappable supplies.
This means that either of the unit's power supplies can be replaced without causing any network downtime, a feature that supports the ability for data centres to offer quality of service guarantees to their customers.
"Our OEM customers, particularly those designing data centre applications, increasingly require products that offer higher bandwidth, high availability and reliability as well as scalability", said Clarence Peckham, president of SBS Technologies' commercial and government groups.

The EC6 is an all-in-one single board computer offering scalable processing power with low power consumption.
"EIS-4008-CU, the first member of our growing family of InfiniBand products, delivers true 10Gbit/s transport capabilities and an abundant feature set at a reasonable price point", continued Peckham.
EIS-4008-CU uses a fully nonblocking internal switch architecture that supports cut-through, store and forward switch algorithms.
Both unicast and multicast packet types are supported.
A sleep/wake from console function is supported via an out-of-band message.
Each bidirectional 4x port supports bitrates up to 10Gbit/s in each direction allowing a 16Gbit/s full-duplex datarate per port.
Based on the RedSwitch HDMP-2840 eight-port 4x InfiniBand switch fabric chip, the switching element provides an overall aggregate bandwidth of 160Gbit/s.
Redundant circuits; hot swappable power supplies and fans are accessed from the front of the chassis.
The fans can be configured for front to back or back to front airflow.
Depending on how often equipment needs to be configured, data-centre equipment racks are set up in one of two ways: connector wires facing toward the front or facing toward the back.
Therefore, SBS specifically designed the EIS-4008-CU with a unique fan system that allows the switch to be configured to face either direction with equal ease.
SBS built the switch to be compatible with the InfiniBand specification, with an onboard microprocessor management subsystem and three management agents.
Based on the Motorola MPC855T PowerPC, the management subsystem includes 64Mbyte SDRAM, 64Mbyte Flash memory, a 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet port with RJ45 connector and an RS232 port with DB9 connector.
To ensure interoperability, the EIS-4008-CU complies with InfiniBand architecture specification volume 1, release 1.0.a and volume 2, release 1.0.a.
The EIS-4008-CU will be available from December 2002.
