Adapters link VME with PC-based systems
A new family of VME64 bus-to-bus adapters conveniently connects two buses - either VME64 with another VME64, or VME64 with PCI, PMC, or CompactPCI - effectively creating one virtual bus.

CompactPCI SBC takes the rough with the smooth
The CM4 3U is a CompactPCI single board computer for new and legacy commercial and government COTS applications operating in harsh environments.
With the trend towards the adoption of more PCs in embedded computing applications, these adapters are ideal for connecting VME systems to a PC, workstation or CompactPCI system eliminating the need for a single board computer or allowing a VME user to migrate to one of these other technologies while preserving their existing VMEbus investment.
"The new SBS VME64 bus-to-bus adapters are a cost-effective solution for developers who have, or who are creating, applications requiring large amounts of data that must be transferred efficiently and at high speed.
Applications that demand straightforward VME64 and PCI bus integration will definitely benefit as well", said Bill Molyneux, Vice President, I/O Products for SBS.

"SBS Technologies has a history of providing embedded system engineers with unique bus adapters.
This new series raises the performance level and ensures bus adapters will be available for years to come", continued Molyneux.
The adapters allow each system's bus to operate independently and bus bandwidth is only affected when a memory or I/O reference is made from one system to another, enhancing performance.
Another feature is the adapter's unique memory mapping RAM.
This allows any memory location on the VMEbus to be mapped in the address space of the other bus.
A processor on one bus can use a programmed I/O (PIO) to transparently read and write a remote memory location just as if it were a local bus access with as little as 2us of latency.
The mapping RAM also dynamically handles typical byte-swapping issues between the PCI and VMEbuses and supports contiguous or noncontiguous data blocks enabling data scatter/gather of up to 16Mbyte of data with a single DMA.
The controller mode DMA allows data transfer in either direction to be initiated by the local or remote processor.
The 8x0 series VME64 adapters are typically purchased as board pairs but may be purchased as individual cards.
