Filters secure powerline communications

Schaffner has developed a new range of specialised decoupling filters for use in domestic and industrial powerline communication (PLC) systems.

Schaffner has developed a new range of specialised decoupling filters for use in domestic and industrial powerline communication (PLC) systems PLC technology is already being used today to transfer data via the mains electricity supply in simple household socket-to-socket systems or between external service providers and their subscribers

Current datarates are between 60bit/s and 28Kbit/s, and technology is now available to move to 10Mbit/s, subject to final approval.

The need for adequate filters has been recognised by CENELEC, and system requirements are defined in the standard EN50065.

Without correct filtering PLC systems may be vulnerable to interference from neighbouring systems or electronic devices.

Privacy may be compromised and, in the case of uncoded data, incorrect commands may occur.

These new products from Schaffner follow extensive development work with a Scandinavian electricity company and are now being made available to PLC system planners, PLC appliance manufacturers, electricity and data service suppliers to ensure the provision of safe, reliable and secure transmission of both data and voice over the existing power grid.

PLC filters from Schaffner: protect transmitted data from unintentional or deliberate signal corruption or eavesdropping; eliminate the ingress of unwanted signals and interference; and prevent spurious transmissions.

A further benefit is reduced signal attenuation allowing more reliable communication over greater distances.

Andrew Kotas, Marketing Manager for Schaffner comments: "The experience we have already gained from working on joint development initiatives with makers of PLC appliances and transmission modules will allow us to offer a very fast time to market for future projects".
