New from Schaffner, the W629 electro-emulation tester offers OEMs efficient strategies for testing finished products and partial assemblies during the manufacturing process.

New from Schaffner, the W629 electro-emulation tester offers OEMs efficient strategies for testing finished products and partial assemblies during the manufacturing process Functions available include open and short-circuit tests, insulation tests up to 500V DC and passive component tests with an integrated RLC measuring bridge (from DC to 100kHz AC, programmable)

The W629 enables the user to quickly and easily measure values and electrical characteristics of passive components and wiring circuits, switching contacts and indicators.

Testing can be further enhanced by active tests of components and subassemblies with a supply voltage up to 30V AC or 60V DC.

Control units may be stimulated using CAN or K-Line communications and responses and measured by the tester.

The W629 is controlled by a standard PC using a parallel interface and comes complete with the IVIS 5 user-friendly software package.

This gives full control of test programming, signal processing control, data management and collection and evaluation of test data.

The W629 can test for continuity down to 3mohm using four-wire measuring techniques and twisted-pair cables may be tested for continuity and shield integrity with capacitance measurements in the range 10pF to 10nF.

Insulation or hipot testing up to 5Gohm is available using an internal programmable 500V DC power source and "arc" detection is provided.

All common components may be tested and measured, resistors from 3mohm to 500Mohm, capacitors from 10nF to 10,000uF, inductors from 1uH to 1H and diodes, Zener diodes and transistors with voltages up to 500V DC.

Event timing and pulse generation from 1.25us to 327ms is available for testing electromechanical devices.

A unique feature of the new W629 is the inclusion of an RLC bridge, making the tester completely self-contained.

Having a fully integrated RLC bridge significantly reduces the time required to complete test routines by removing the need to interface to and communicate with additional external test equipment.

Full measurement capabilities are available including, impedance, admittance, phase-angle, resistance, capacitance, inductance, dissipation factor, reactance, conductance and susceptance.

Schaffner specialises in electro-emulation testing, the testing of complex assemblies which may include electronic, electromechanical, indicating devices and cable harnesses.

Frequently these complex assemblies also require an operator to provide control and stimulus.

The W629 can provide the unit under test with programmable voltages up to 30V AC or 60V DC, emulate switching functions and the operational environment (using electronic loads, frequency generators etc), functionally test pushbuttons and switches and import characteristic performance curves of external devices for interpretation by the IVIS 5 software.

The W629 is a 19in rack mountable system operating from 110/230V AC, 50/60Hz.

Its modular construction allows expansion and user configuration of test modules.

A wide range of modules is available for wiring test, input signal, power supply and input/output for connecting external measuring devices (ie oscilloscopes, frequency counters etc).

The W629 has the following interfaces: parallel for PC control with pass-through output for printers, optically isolated PC interface, controller interface to trigger and synchronise external devices and fixtures, software control for IEE488/GPIB, RS232, PCbus, CANbus, CAN Open and K-Line.

Wireless remote control is available by hand-held PC (W-LAN) or via TCP/IP connection.

"Many manufacturers and integrators of complex systems are now being faced with having to test 'black boxes' which often fulfil complex functions", comments Andrew Kotas, Marketing Manager of Schaffner.

"In markets such as automotive, aerospace and railways such assemblies may control safety and comfort systems such as seat adjustment, air conditioning, engine management and air bags".

"Simple testing is no longer an option, and our new W629 provides a flexible automated solution to fully functional testing and simulation of the operating environment which can be vital to ensure correct function and reliability".

Typical applications include, testing passive components, electronic devices and wiring, active testing of electronic and electromechanical components, electro-emulation testing of controllers, electrical distribution systems, switching and indicating panels and control units.
