Medical manufacturer takes compliance in
house
A newly equipped test lab allows medical equipment manufacturer KeyMed to perform practically all the EMC testing required for its products and meet the requirements of EN60601-1-2.
Schaffner has completed a new EMC test facility for KeyMed, an international leader in the manufacture and supply of specialised medical and industrial equipment Over recent years KeyMed have implemented a policy of bringing EMC testing in-house wherever possible to save cost, carry out precompliance testing and reduce time to market of its products

Harmonic filters raise power system efficiency
Load-applied passive harmonic filters represent the ideal solution for three-phase power electronics with six-pulse rectifier front ends.
Thermal management complements EMC
Range encompasses single component PCB mounted heatsinks through to high-performance fan-cooled heatsink assemblies and liquid coolers.
The medical EMC standard EN60601-1-2 was widely amended in 2001 and introduces a number of important changes to the requirements for medical equipment in terms of test application and acceptable performance.
Significantly, new test requirements for harmonics and voltage fluctuation ("flicker") testing were introduced and the frequency range for radiated immunity testing was expanded from 26MHz to 1GHz to 80MHz to 2.5GHz.
To meet these new requirements KeyMed has now purchased a complete immunity and emissions test system from Schaffner.

Catalogue covers power efficiency
A fold-out section in Schaffner's EMC catalogue provides a list of typical applications for each product, allowing users to identify the right component for specific environments.
Filtered inlets raise attenuation levels
Additional ranges of IEC inlet filter modules are developed for applications requiring high attenuation performance or additional attenuation on the earth line.
To cover all possible eventualities an NSG2050 system for lightning surge and fast transients and a Profline 2105 test system to meet the new requirements for harmonics and flicker were also supplied.
The RF immunity system supplied comprises: Schaffner's market leading Compliance 3 EMC test automation software; a signal generator, three different RF power amplifiers (CBA 9413B/CBA 9429/CBA 9437); a CBL 6144 XWing bilog antenna; a range of Schaffner test accessories including CDNs, EM clamps, a field probe; and an SCR 3512 EMI receiver fitted into a dedicated system rack and test console.
This enables KeyMed to perform conducted RF immunity testing from 150kHz to 230MHz and generate more than 10V/m from 80MHz to 2.5GHz for radiated immunity testing.
KeyMed is now in a position to do practically all the EMC testing required for its products and meet the requirements of EN60601-1-2.
Once assembled and tested the test system was installed on site in KeyMed's test facility by specialist Schaffner engineers.
Once commissioning was complete, a four-day on-site training course was provided for KeyMed's EMC test team.
KeyMed selected Schaffner to provide this system for a number of reasons.
An existing good relationship between the companies has been established through earlier equipment purchases.
The quality and breadth of the Schaffner product range and the expertise of the systems team in integrating the system components into a whole.
Schaffner are also one of the few suppliers that can provide everything required to be able to test to the requirements of the amended standard, together with the ability to integrate the system on site.
Having a single supplier also simplified purchasing and project management.
A key feature of the Schaffner system is the highly regarded Compliance 3 software, which not only communicates with Schaffner's test equipment but equally well with any third party supplier's products.
Simple-to-set-up automated test routines may be configured for any test methodology, including medical, commercial, telecom, military and automotive specifications. Request a free brochure from Schaffner ...
