Seiko Instruments has released what it claims to be the smallest Li-ion battery protection IC (BPIC).

Seiko Instruments has released what it claims to be the smallest Li-ion battery protection IC (BPIC) Seiko's S-8261 BPIC has superior accuracy for overcharge (25mV), overdischarge (50mV) and overcurrent (15mV) detection voltages

For added protection, the S-8261 is the only BPIC to incorporate a third level of overcurrent detection.

Applications for the S-8261 include hand-held scanners, notebook computers and other portable electronic devices that use lithium-ion rechargeable single-cell battery packs.

In keeping with Seiko's desire to be the low-current leader, the S-8261 consumes only 3.5uA while operating and only 0.1uA in power-down mode.

Housed in a 6-pin SNB(B) package, the S-8261 provides the smallest footprint, measuring only 1.8 by 2.0mm and 0.75mm tall.

This BPIC also comes in an SOT-23-6 package.

Pricing begins at $0.35 and $0.30 in quantities of 10K for the SNB(B) and SOT-23-6 packaging, respectively.
