Chip giant invests in open-source EDA

A developer of open-source electronic design automation (EDA) software has received an investment from a leading chip maker to expand the scope and usage of OpenAccess-based products.

The investment will be used to further enhance Silicon Navigator's products, including its Rocket Design Environment programmable framework.
Additionally, the companies will work together to extend OpenAccess products to meet next-generation design and EDA needs.
"Silicon Navigator's relationship with Intel is representative of a new class of standards-based alliances between EDA companies and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs)", says Silicon Navigator CEO J George Janac.
"EDA suppliers can now provide tools and services based on the OpenAccess database versus proprietary databases".
"The two companies have been involved in OpenAccess for many years, and we share a common goal of enabling and developing open EDA components based on plug-in architectures".
Rahul Goyal, Director, EDA Business for Intel, adds: "This investment, coupled with our ongoing collaboration with Silicon Navigator, will help drive OpenAccess usage and evolution beyond current applications".

"Likewise, Silicon Navigator serves on the OpenAccess change team".
Silicon Navigator's business model is based on licensing application programming interface (API) based infrastructure and engines for chip design.
The company provides EDA development tools and support to build products providing API's to all components.
It bases its software on standards such at Qt, OpenGL, C++, TCL, Python and OpenAccess.
The Rocket Design Environment (RDE) framework's architecture represents the next generation of EDA software where core algorithms are simply inserted into a common infrastructure.
