Dual port fibre channel GBIC

A Selectronix product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team May 8, 2000

Fibre channel and SCSI specialist Selectronix has released what is claimed to be the world's first dual-port fibre optic Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC).

Selectronix the Fibre Channel and SCSI specialists has released what it claims to be the world's first dual-port fibre optic Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC).

Made by Methode, the optical data links specialist from Chicago, this new GBIC combines two LC optical transceivers in the standard GBIC module.

The result is double port density compared to conventional SC connector-equipped GBICs.

Compatibility is maintained with the same SCA-2 electrical connectors, panel cut-outs and release levers used in standard GBICs.

Designed for Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and ATM applications, this new dual-port GBIC is available in both single and multi-mode versions.

It provides a doubling of port density by fitting two transceivers into the same amount of space as would be required by a conventional single-port SC GBIC.

They are hot pluggable and compliant with GBIC specifications for optical links.

A special keyed rail system prevents accidental mis-mating of the double-density GBIC into a standard GBIC slot.
