Frugal LED driver saves components too
The SC600 LED driver incorporates Semtech's new mAhXLife (milliamp hours extended life) technology to produce a highly efficient, tightly regulated, output voltage to power LED backlighting.
The device contains two independently enabled, ultralow-dropout voltage regulators (ULDOs).
It operates from an input voltage range of 2.5 to 6.5V with a wide variety of output voltage options available as standard offerings.
Each regulator has an associated active-low reset signal that is asserted when the voltage output declines below the preset threshold.
These reset signals are used to signal microprocessors, DSPs or other components that require notification when their proper input voltage is not available.
Once the output recovers, the reset continues to be asserted (delayed) for a predetermined time (50ms for reset A and 150ms for reset B) to assure that the regulator is operating at the correct output voltage.
In the case of regulator B, the delay time may be reduced by the addition of an external capacitor.
Integration of two regulators into one package, combined with reset capability allows the designer to cost reduce and save space without compromising performance.
The SC1452 uses CMOS technology to achieve very low operating current (130uA typical for both ULDOs at full load).
The dropout voltage is typically 155mV at 150mA, helping to prolong battery life.
In addition, the device is guaranteed to provide 400mA of peak current for applications that require high initial in-rush current.
Other features of the SC1452 include 2% output voltage accuracy over line, load and temperature (full industrial temperature range), reverse-battery, short-circuit and overtemperature protection.
Each regulator is guaranteed to deliver 150mA of output current.
It is designed for use with low ESR ceramic capacitors to save cost and board space.
The SC1452 has a bypass pin to capacitively decouple the bandgap reference for very low output noise (down to 50uV RMS with a 2.2uF output capacitor).
The SC1452 comes in a low profile 10-lead MSOP.
The SC1452 will be available through Semtech's network of direct sales representatives and distributors, and is priced at $1.50 for 1000 unit quantities.
