Power chip puts five ULDOs under
software control
The SC900 is an I2C software-controlled power management device incorporating five individual ultra-low-dropout regulators in a tiny 4 x 4mm package.
New from Semtech Corp, the SC900 is an I2C software-controlled power management device incorporating five individual ultra-low-dropout (ULDO) regulators in a tiny 4 x 4mm package The SC900 adds the flexibility of I2C bus control so designers can quickly modify up to five common use, low dropout regulator requirements often present in battery-operated designs

Linear FET controllers for space-saving PSU design
Semtech has a new family of linear FET controllers that enable simple, space-saving design of distributed single and dual power supplies on primary and peripheral circuit boards.
Critical operational parameters can be changed or reset without replacing individual ULDOs or interface circuitry.
These parameters include reset logic, power good indication, output voltage and active shutdown.
Designers will find the SC900 ideal for cellular phones, PDAs, personal media players, palmtop/laptop computers, and similar portable equipment.
In these battery-powered devices it is essential that performance be maintained as the battery voltage slowly declines.
This product delivers full performance on all five ULDOs over the input range of 2.7 to 5.5V.
All five ULDOs are I2C programmable in 50mV increments from 1.45 to 3.00V with an accuracy of +/-3%, and each LDO can be independently enabled/disabled.
Output noise is 45uV (RMS), power supply rejection ratio is 60dB at 50mA, and current drawn in sleep mode is approximately 215uA for all five ULDOs in total operation.
Device PCB footprint is approximately 4 x 4mm assuring that the SC900 will make multi-ULDO layout more straightforward.
"The SC900's I2C interface allows for last minute adjustments to the five key power parameters to optimise system performance".
"Hardware designers can also focus on cost reduction via integration rather than individual device selection and qualification", says CS Mitter, Semtech's Director of Power Management for Handheld Products.
The SC900 provides protection circuitry that prevents the device from operating in an unspecified state.
These include undervoltage lockout protection, overtemperature protection and short circuit protection.
The SC900 is available immediately in production quantities and is priced at $1.05 in 1000-piece lots.
The device is available in a 4 x 4mm MLPQ-20 package.
Ordering code is SC900IMLTRT.
An evaluation kit containing a graphical user interface (GUI) program, USB cable and evaluation board is also available with the ordering code of SC900EVB.
