Sequoia has established a new business division with the goal of becoming a leading supplier of specialist sensors and precision passive components to European markets.

Sequoia has established a new business division with the goal of becoming a leading supplier of specialist sensors and precision passive components to European markets.

The sensors division leverages new and exclusive partnership agreements with some of the worlds leading manufacturers with products ranging from high-speed photodetectors and sensor arrays, through high-current protection devices to precision heat flux sensors.

Catering for applications from optical test and measurement to process control, aerospace and engine management systems, the new division is highly complementary to Sequoia's existing silicon, display solutions and wireless businesses.

It will provide customers with early access to new and emerging technologies, backed by a European centre of excellence encompassing technical and applications engineering support.

Heading the new division is Chris Binsley, former managing director of Rhopoint Components.

Binsley, a chartered physicist and MBA graduate, has previously held roles in sales, marketing and general management within the UK, Germany, Switzerland and the USA, following extensive experience as an electronics design engineer.

He has recruited three new staff specifically to support the business.

These bring unrivalled expertise in designing-in and applying advanced sensor components.

They further bring their substantial experience of providing sales support for new technologies within the wider European marketplace.

These new appointments, together with an international team of technical support staff, will help customers harness a raft of new technologies to gain competitive advantages in their specialised fields.

Amongst them are products from three new partnerships.

An exclusive partnership with USA-based Vatell Corporation provides European customers with sales and technical support for the company's high-performance heat flux sensors.

This includes access to the widest range of heat flux sensors from any manufacturer and the patented manufacturing process gives the innovative HFM series of products the industries fastest response time, minimal effects on measured variables and operating temperatures of up to 8500C.

There are also agreements with Optolynx which develops photodetectors and sensor arrays with a unique combination of large active areas, high bandwidth and low capacitance, allowing these devices to be particularly suited for 10GHz multimode fibre applications, optical test and measurement and laser monitoring; Ametherm which produces high-performance NTC thermistors and inrush current limiters.

Capable of withstanding 40A continuous current and 350J of input energy, these latest UL approved surge protection devices will provide particular benefits to power supplies, motor drives and audio amplifiers; and other partners manufacturing magnetoresistive and current sensors designed for sensing inertia, position, speed, angle and current to precision high-resistance and high-voltage resistors focused on biasing, signal conditioning and cardiac medical equipment.

Suppliers and customers alike will benefit from Sequoia's international sales operations, advanced stocking and distribution facilities.
