"World's smallest" claims for switches and relays

A new range of devices from Sequoia Sensors includes the world's smallest reed switch for medical electronics applications such as pacemakers, endoscopes and hearing aids.

The world's smallest reed switch, for medical electronics applications such as pacemakers, endoscopes and hearing aids as well as miniature industrial position sensors and consumer PDAs has been added by Sequoia Sensors following a partnership agreement with specialist reed relay and switch manufacturer Coto Technology of Rhode Island, USA.

Rated at 5W but only 5mm long, the Coto Technology RI-80 reed switch is also well suited for high reliability, small signal automatic test equipment.

Also available from Sequoia are the Coto 9012, the smallest 10W SIP relay (10 x 4 x 10mm), and the 9011, the smallest 3W SIP relay (10 x 4 x 7mm).

Coto's line of dry reed switches features 5, 7, 10, 13.5, 15 and 20.5mm glass lengths, with moulded switch options or surface mount types with long life and reliability.

The performance of the reed switch range is the result of manufacturing methods perfected over many years.

An exceptionally rugged ruthenium contact layer applied by electrochemical plating or by a sputtering process unique to Coto assures lifetimes up to 1 billion operations.

A proprietary assembly process ensures perfect reed alignment for low, stable contact resistance.

Also available from Sequoia is the Coto range of low-thermal-EMF reed relays, capable of carrying up to 6A, and providing switching currents up to 4A along with 10-15kV switching.

Products range from the world's smallest surface-mount reed relay to large high-voltage reed relays.
