Sequoia Technology has launched a series of UK seminars to introduce UK design and control engineers to the potential of "Smart Dust".

Smart Dust networks, based on the use of large numbers of very low cost, self organising, wireless sensors, are transforming data collection in industrial control, building automation, security, environmental and other applications.

The first seminar proved so successful that further free seminars will now be held at Sequoia's offices in Reading, on Wednesday 23rd February, Wednesday 20th April and Wednesday 15th June.

Starting with an introduction wireless mesh networks, the seminars go on to look at Tiny OS, the open source operating system on which Crossbow Smart Dust networks are based.

They then introduce the hardware involved: radio/processor boards (Motes), sensor boards and gateways.

The session wraps up with a practical example of a mesh wireless sensor network.

Crossbow is the leading end-to-end solutions supplier in wireless sensor networks and the largest manufacturer of Smart Dust wireless sensors, open source, TinyOS-based platform, a technology that enables "intelligent", sensors to self-organise, capturing and sending data efficiently as required.
