Sequoia's new Ethernet PHY is not only the smallest in the world, but also offers low overall cost per port, plus ease of use features to create an attractive solution for the new generation of networked consumer electronics.

The new TDK 78Q2123 PHY from Sequoia offers a low cost, fully featured Ethernet interface in just 5x5mm, and needs a minimum of external components required to complete the port.

It is aimed at applications such as broadband modems, printers, digital video recorders, digital TVs and set-top boxes that are increasingly specified with an Ethernet interface, but provide a challenging environment in terms of price sensitivity and space.

A further key differentiator in these applications is ease of use, and the Sequoia TDK PHY is amongst the first to implement HP AutoMDI/X, which allows the user to connect end nodes together directly without a router, and also eliminates problems with cross-over/straight connection errors.

The compact 78Q2123 offers 10/100 base-T, 802.3 compatibility, and a full media independent interface.

A lower cost bill of materials per complete port is achieved as the TDK PHY requires fewer external components than alternatives, uses requires no costly tantalum capacitors, and its integrated line drivers need just a 1:1 transformer.

Two LED pins to provide status indication are integrated onto the device.

The PHY also offers extremely low power consumption, drawing just 95mA from a 3.3V supply.
