Silicon platform cuts tuner parts count
StreamCharger from SiGe is a silicon platform that enables the world's lowest power, most integrated downstream tuners for DOCSIS cable telephony equipment, cable modems and digital set-top boxes.
The 2.5Gbit/s components are the first products to sample from a portfolio of TIAs, laser drivers, and post amplifiers provided to SiGe Semiconductor under an exclusive licence agreement with a major telecommunications manufacturer.
The complete portfolio includes 11 devices in various stages of design and production, which will enhance reliability, flexibility and speed of network equipment operating from 155Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s.
SiGe Semiconductor will also take ownership of design and test equipment, which, when combined with the company's volume manufacturing capabilities and synergistic sales channels, will allow rapid delivery of products to market.

The PA2423L has become the second Class 1 Bluetooth power amplifier from SiGe to be selected by CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) for integration on CSR's BlueCore1 modules.
All 11 devices will be sampling under the LightCharger brand by the end of 2002, providing customers with a complete range of solutions for the active components in an optical interface module.
"We are entering the optical market with several advantages over our competitors that will ensure our position among market leaders", said Jim Derbyshire, president and CEO, SiGe Semiconductor.
"Since we are not vertically integrated, customers can align closely with our design teams without competitive threat.
Also, the optical ICs fit within our existing skills, infrastructure and supply chains, allowing us to quickly deliver 2.5Gbit/s products to customers.
The 2.5Gbit/s devices will produce revenue this year, while we leverage our expertise to deliver 10Gbit/s components for next-generation equipment".
TIAs and AGC amplifier enhance stability and performance of 2.5Gbit/s systems SiGe's SE1030 and SE1031 are fully integrated TIAs designed for low-noise front-end receiver systems up to 2.5Gbit/s.
The devices incorporate a unique AGC architecture that ensures the output from the front-end does not saturate the output driver stage that follows.
This allows outstanding sensitivity for input signals up to 2.6mA peak, as well as optimised noise performance with a sensitivity of -26dBm for 10-10bit error rate.
With very low power consumption, the devices are ideal for use in small form factor (SFF) applications.
The SE1030 has a power dissipation of 170mW, while the SE1031 typically operates at 110mW.
The AGC amplifier follows the TIA in the receive chain, providing the amplification required to boost input signals for the serialiser-deserialiser.
With small signal gain of 23.5dB, and a noise figure of less than 12dB, the SE1230 optimises signal control in telecom and datacomms applications.
No additional components are required for the AGC function, thereby reducing the BOM, board space, and production costs.
The device is also optimised for low power consumption, with 230mW power dissipation.
All three devices can be configured for single-ended or differential operation, enhancing flexibility to accommodate application-specific wire bond options.
Each operates using a single 3.3V supply.
The SE1030 and SE1031 are provided in bare die form, priced at US $4.85 in 10k quantities.
The SE1230 is packaged in a standard 32-pin LFQP that measures 5mm2, priced at US $14.50 in 10k quantities.
All three devices are available now in production volumes.
The TIAs and AGC amplifier are supported by SiGe Semiconductor's team of applications and design engineers, which includes the recent addition of 16 designers who formerly worked on the team that developed these optical interface components.
An evaluation kit is available, and all devices are supplied with full documentation including data sheets and schematics.
