Amplifier IC upgrades Wi-Fi performance
High linearity Wi-Fi power amp optimises transmission of greater datarates over longer distances, allowing systems to support emerging wireless multimedia applications.
The 10Gbit/s TIA solution is manufactured using a process that ensures stable electrical performance, and excellent linearity.
This improves sensitivity of optical receivers, enabling high performance in equipment supporting bandwidth-intensive services like video streaming, voice over the Internet (VoIP) and bundled voice, data and video.
This launch marks SiGe Semiconductor's entrance into the 10Gbit/s market, which is expected by Gartner Dataquest to represent a US $90 million opportunity by 2005, up from US $15 million today.

Power amplifiers cut Wi-Fi costs
SiGe Semiconductor has released two new power amplifiers that provide manufacturers with the lowest cost route to developing Wi-Fi systems.
To expand on this opportunity, SiGe Semiconductor is developing its line of 10Gbit/s PHY layer ICs to include a limiting amplifier, EA modulator driver, DFB laser driver, and VCSEL driver.
With availability scheduled for later this year, these ICs will provide customers with a complete solution for the active components at the optical PHY layer.
"SiGe Semiconductor is entering the high-speed transport market at the perfect time", said Jim Derbyshire, president and CEO, SiGe Semiconductor.
"We have had very positive feedback from our lead customers, and I am confident that our ability to provide outstanding performance and stability will secure our position among the leading PHY layer component providers".
The SE1050 is a fully integrated 10Gbit/s TIA offering 9.8GHz bandwidth and 1200ohm transimpedance.
The device offers a wide dynamic range, as well as optimised noise performance of 14pA/(rt)Hz with a sensitivity of -20dBm for 10e-10 bit error rate.
In addition, the 5V supply and 340mW operating current offers module manufacturers a compact, cost-effective solution for small form factor 10Gbit/s optical receivers.
The device is flexible for a range of application requirements, able to be configured for single-ended or differential output voltages and capable of swinging up to 1.1V peak-peak differential into a 100ohm load.
This provides sufficient drive for a post amplifier or direct input into a serialiser-deserialiser.
The TIA is supported by SiGe Semiconductor's team of applications and design engineers, and is supplied with documentation that includes a comprehensive data sheet and application note.
