SiGe Semiconductor has expanded its series of LightCharger optical interface ICs with the SE1032W transimpedance amplifier and the SE1235L limiting amplifier.

SiGe Semiconductor has expanded its series of LightCharger optical interface ICs with the SE1032W transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and the SE1235L limiting amplifier The pair provides designers with the highest performance receive chain solution for fibre-optic modules used in Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and Sonet/SDH-based communication systems

SiGe's new SE1032W TIA is the lowest noise 2.5Gbit/s silicon TIA on the market.

The device, along with the SE1235L limiting amplifier, is based on an efficient silicon germanium architecture that improves jitter, noise performance, power dissipation and bandwidth.

This enables performance similar to that achieved with alternative GaAs or InP technologies, without the cost premiums.

The solution requires no external components, which reduces system design complexity, board space and cost.

"The primary requirement of system designers is to achieve real system-level performance, rather than bench-level performance measured under ideal conditions.

We have addressed this with products that take into account system-level surroundings to ensure high performance in the presence of supply noise and crosstalk", said Imran Sherazi, Product Line Manager, SiGe Semiconductor.

"The SE1032W and SE1235L are designed as a pair to eliminate the challenges typically faced by transceiver designers in meeting overall system performance".

The SE1032W is the lowest noise silicon 2.5Gbit/s TIA on the market, featuring a noise density of 5.6pA/(rt)Hz.

The excellent noise figure improves reception of weaker optical signals to ensure high system performance.

The SE1032 provides 3.5kohm of differential transimpedance, and is equipped with on-chip automatic gain control (AGC) that supports a wide dynamic range for improved sensitivity.

The device supports an input current load of 2.6mA peak, and an input referred noise of 250nA RMS, optimising both sensitivity and overload to ensure excellent link-budget margins against today's system specifications.

SiGe's SE1235L limiting amplifier supports datarates up to 3.3Gbit/s, for operation at OC-48 and higher datarates.

The device features a small signal gain of 33dB differential, and a maximum noise figure of 12dB, which ensures optimal signal control at the system level.

Both devices operate using a single 3.3V supply, and can be configured for single or differential outputs in support of a range of applications.

With low power dissipation of 145mW for the SE1032W, and 126mW for the SE1235L, the pair is firmly targeted at small form factor solutions.
